I have just ordered a bird book but it's only for birds found in the SE of the States. I'll have a look into the one you be suggested though because I am awful with Id'ing birdies in the US. Thanks for the help with the ID and the bird book suggestion!

Do you have a Sibley's Birds Guide to Birds of North America it will give great detail on varietal coloration and changes over life of the bird. When I worked as an interpretive ranger it was the bird bible for ID.
