Field Notes

Description:

These red ants with large mandibles were very aggressive, even threatening the camera (second picture). They were caring for a batch of what looks like just hatched Treehopper nymphs.

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.

Thank you Maria. The last picture intrigues me, how the ants are all hanging in the same guarding position on the underside of the branch.
