American Bison
Bison
33.3834, -118.418
Field Notes
Description:
Bison weight over 2,000 pounds and despite their large size they can run 40 mph. An estimated 20 to 30 million Bison once roamed the plains of North America. They were wiped out by hunting and almost went extinct. Now, their numbers are back up to about 200,000. However, less than 5,000 exist unfenced and disease-free. This is one of them.
Fun Fact:
Their fur is so heavily insulated that layered snow on top of them will not melt.
Habitat:
Plains, forest.
Notes:
I was told by the Catalina Island Conservancy that Bison were not on this side of the island. So you can understand that my heart dropped as I rounded a large bush and found myself on the backside of a bison not 30 ft away from me. Pushing my luck to get photographs of this animal was a very bad idea. However, this one pictured here is different and was much more welcoming to my presence.
