Field Notes

Description:

This was the largest Walking Stick I have ever seen. An arm's length of a brown wingless stick. This one must have been quite old, it has suffered a previous loss of a front leg and most of both it's antennae. It has it's own personalized fauna, including mites, spider webbing and algae. We found it on the back of a chair on the terrace overlooking the ocean. When I moved it to the garden, it climbed slowly about until it had positioned itself in a well camouflaged spot near other brown branches (5th picture). We were only able to get close-ups of it's face because of the loss of one front leg which left one side clearly visible. There is a strange little finger-like thing on the neck area that I can't figure out…….The eye was especially beautiful in a face only a mother could love. Family Phasmidae.

Habitat:

Close to Mazunte Beach, Oaxaca.

I think some of these are parthenogenetic so it might be a face only itself could love too?? You're right though, I'm sure they design some of our screen horrors directly from the arthropod world.
Thanks Mark, I really think this is one of the scariest faces I've ever seen! Looks just like the Predator without it's mask.
What face and eyes! They don't live very long. Martin will be impressed.
