Field Notes
Description:
The Castañuela is characterized by its oval, laterally flattened body, a dark brown color, lighter on the sides and on the ventral part. Its size does not usually exceed 15 cm and it is a relatively long-lived fish, since it has a life expectancy of 15 - 18 years. The fry have a very intense cobalt blue coloration, which they lose as they grow and is barely visible once they reach maturity, except if we observe them from above, a thin intense blue line appears along the dorsal fin. Another very characteristic mark is the tail fin, strongly forked with the two elongated and black lobes.
Habitat:
Rocky coast and Posidonia meadows of Cabo de Palos (Murcia)
