Field Notes

Habitat:

This Big-eyed bug was spotted in our vegetable plot, on String bean (Vigna unguiculata) known as Sitaw, in the Philippines. Plant information from - http://www.stuartxchange.org/Sitaw.....

Notes:

Geocoridae; Geocorinae; Geocoris flaviceps flaviceps (Burmeister, 1834). According to https://lygaeoidea.speciesfile.org/..... this subspecies is present in the Philippines. As you can see in the photos, this bug has its rostrum pushed into the stem of the plant and is, presumably drinking the sap. So that pretty much confirms that the Big-eyed Bug is a herbivore, but in a previous spotting https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1535529712..... I showed one of these bugs stabbing an insect with its rostrum, indicating that it is also carnivorous. From now on, I can just call this bug omnivorous. It might be interesting to find out how many bugs are omnivorous.
