Field Notes

Description:

These diminutive chipmunks are the smallest of all chipmunks. Body length is only 3-4 inches (175-225 mm). The base color is a splotchy mix of reddish brown to light gray. There are three dark and two light stripes on the face and five dark and four light stripes along their sides. It has a long (for its body size) bushy tail that is mixed colors of brown, gray and beige.

Habitat:

N. Minimus is found throughout central and western Canada, and most of the western United States. These were found in a Ponderosa pine forest in the Colorado Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 2,800 masl.

Notes:

These were very quick chipmunks that seldom sat still. They made mad dashes from a bunch of rocks to their food source and back again. I have many blurred shots of them leaping from rock to rock :-)
