Field Notes

Description:

Common yet rarely seen, small owl of Eastern North American woodlands the Eastern Screech-Owl is found wherever trees are. Their camouflage allows them to hide in plain sight in nooks and tree crannies through the day but their distinctive spooky call can be often heard at night.

Habitat:

These small, nocturnal birds hunt from perches, often an old tree, using their excellent hearing to locate their victims, usually in open woodland. From there they swoop down onto their prey, such as mice, squirrels, chipmunks, bats, insects, reptiles and small birds. These birds are usually solitary except during the winter breeding season.

Notes:

Eastern Screech Owls come in two distinct color phases or morphs, red and grey. This individual is the gray morph.
