These boys were experiencing Musth, which is a periodic condition in bull elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behavior, accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. You can tell by the secretions from the temporal duct on the sides of the head.

Thanks for the comments. Quite scary being close to these large beasts when they're grumpy but very exciting!
