Field Notes

Description:

A species of poppy. It is an annual herb with bright yellow sap.

Habitat:

Found in Mexico and now widely naturalized in the United States, India and Ethiopia.

Notes:

The seeds resemble the seeds of Brassica nigra (mustard). As a result, mustard oil is adulterated by argemone seed oil rendering it poisonous, though the plant has its own medicinal uses.
