Field Notes

Description:

a fist-sized hole in a power pole

Notes:

A friend pointed it out in her neighborhood. The story is that a pilated woodpecker created the hole some years ago and only recently has the hole gone all the way through. The second picture shows the original round hole being investigated by a red-bellied woodpecker.
