Field Notes

Description:

Small Tortoiseshell on dandelion

Habitat:

Open fields and gardens

Notes:

This beautiful butterfly is common in my “backyard”, the Swiss Prealps, as well as in all of temperate Europe. While the underwings are uninteresting, when opened the butterfly displays a striking array of colours, including a row of blue triangles on the rear edge. These are emerging now and are about the first butterflies seen in spring.
