Field Notes

Description:

Glossy dark green leaves with sharp, thorny corners that stay evergreen.

Habitat:

Pacific coastal temperate rain forest, under Douglas fir, western hemlock and Sitka spruce.

Notes:

This is the kind that grows wild around here. It tends to grow as isolated plants, not particularly taking over, though an individual holly bush or tree is pretty hardy.
