Field Notes

Description:

Cluster of flowers on a clove tree, Zanzibar.

Habitat:

Tropical belt countries

Notes:

Originally native to the Mollucas Islands, now Zanzibar's major export, so much so that the island is known as "island of cloves". The buds are collected and dried when they are a bright red. Spotted in one of the numerous spice plantations on the island.

Now with the right picture, thank you alicelongmartin!

Alice, you may have seen other plants of the same genus. They all have nice decorative flowers, like the Australian lillipillies, a native and garden favourite down there. I guess these would grow OK in Florida? The Jatropha multifada I uploaded by mistake was found in the same spice plantation.
This of course, is something I have never seen. Interesting.
