Field Notes

Description:

Sharpshooters are small (3-15mm) leafhoppers in the family Cicadellidae. They have a cryptic coloration which is a camouflage to blend into their surroundings. Their large eyes are excellent for visual acuity and to avoid detection and predators.

Habitat:

There are nearly 20,000 described species, making the Cicadellidae the 10th largest insect family. They are common in cultivated fields but are also found in the wild.

Notes:

Some leafhoppers are known for their ability to transmit viruses and bacteria that are causing plant diseases. Leafhoppers can develop rapidly and can have up to 6 generations or more in a year.
