I have just been through all the Cornuses I can find and I think ceherzog is right. Cornus florida.
I think it is Cornus Florida,,,especially when you see the leaves with parallel veining. The flower petals are reflexed in your picture...but there are other species of dogwood that are shrubs. Perhaps what you saw was a young tree?
Thank you Ceherzog for your suggestion. Unfortunately I didn't take more photos but I think it was a bush not a tree.
