Field Notes

Description:

Ariadne albifascia, the White-banded Castor, is a butterfly in the Nymphalidae family.

The butterflies have a slow, graceful flight, weaving their way among bushes and the lower foliage of trees. Males rarely pause to rest for more than a moment or two, except when mud-puddling.

Habitat:

Seen along a dirt road that ran through Kibale forest. Here patches of sun penetrated the forest and there were many butterflies.

This species is found along roadsides in forested habitats, and also in clearings, along riverbanks, and on agricultural land.

Notes:

Kibale National Park (pronounced Chibale) is a national park in South Uganda protecting moist evergreen rain forest. It is 766 km² in size and is located between 1,100–1,600 meters in elevation.

Kibale is one of the last remaining expanses to contain both lowland and montane forests. In East Africa, it sustains the last significant expanse of pre-montane forest.
