Thanks Ashish, I'm going to go with Convolvulus Hawk moth.
I spotted one here in Turkey a about 3 years back, didn't expect to see one here either so they do seem to be getting about.
this looks a lot like Privet hawk moth, but that doesn't seem to occur where I saw it.
