1 3/4 inches; shiny brownish black with large mandibles and fairly long antennae

Habitat:

this buzzed through the kitchen and landed in the hallway

It is a ground beetle (family: Carabidae) Can't be much more help than that though I'm afraid. To get down to species level you usually need a microscope.
