These always made me think of mosquitos.

This is one of the craneflies. There are lots of these guys, however, so it may be very difficult to narrow it down more. Try this page as a start: http://bugguide.net/node/view/183/bgimage Good luck and let us know what you come up with. If you can't narrow it down much more use Cranefly as the common name and something like "Family: Tipulidae" for a scientific name.
