Field Notes

Description:

The burbot is the only freshwater cod. Also known as an eelpout, this fish resembles an eel with its long eel-like body. This particular fish is colored in a typical manner. They can grow quite large--up to 25 pounds--but typically are smaller in the 2-5 pound range.

Habitat:

Large, deepwater lakes, north of the 40th parallel throughout the northern hemisphere.

Notes:

These fish typically stay in deep water and therefore are difficult to reach with traditional fishing gear. During late winter, however, they move into shallower waters and congregate in large breeding swarms. I caught this particular fish on a jig and minnow combination while ice fishing for perch and walleyes.
