Ring-billed Gull
Larus delawarensis
44.748, -92.8063
Field Notes
Description:
Adults are about 19 inches long with a four-foot wingspan. The bird above is in typical breeding plumage, which it gets in its third year. They get their name from the ring on the end of the bill.
Habitat:
Ring-billeds range across most of North America during migration. In summer they are found in much of Canada and the northcentral US, but wintering areas are further south, including Mexico. I find these birds in summer around the vicinity of Lake Superior, large inland lakes, and along the Mississippi River.
