Field Notes

Description:

The northern red oak is a large tree. The leaf is simple, alternate on stem, length 5" to 9"; divided into seven to nine lobes, each extending halfway to the midrib; each lobe somewhat coarsely toothed, bristle tipped, firm, often turning a brilliant red in fall.

Habitat:

Northern red oak trees were seen near the Job Corp site on Hwy 126. They grow throughout Minnesota, but are most common in the rich soil of southern, central, and the southeastern part of the state. They are moderately shade tolerant and fast growing.

Notes:

It has acorn cups that are flat and saucer like across. Acorns are an important winter food source for squirrels, deer, wild turkeys, and several songbirds.
