Field Notes

Description:

1-1/2 inches long, stout black body, membranous wings, red eyes and legs. A little smaller than the green annual cicadas that emerge later in the summer.

Notes:

A large group emerged onto our shrubs. The adult forms emerged from their casings and sat for an hour or so before flying off. I huge group of them now sounds much of the day in our neighborhood.

Thanks! That confrims what they are. I submitted my observation at magicicada.org.
This might be the emergence of a mass brood...one of the events that happens every 13 or 17 years. Check out this site for more info, and maybe you can help them out! http://www.magicicada.org/magicicada_xix.php
