Common deciduous shrub. Member of common lilac species (syringa vulgaris), which are native to the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, where it grows on rocky hills (slope tolerant). Irregular shape, profuse, fragrant deep purple blooms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syringa_vulgaris
