Field Notes

Description:

strange, cylindrical creature, clear case with a small animal moving back and forth inside. it was cool to watch it moving inside this transparent case. I put this in Other, but may belong in Arthropods, I'm not sure.

Habitat:

small stream, temperate forest

Notes:

I did a long hike with fellow ranger ForestDragon. She found this in a shallow area of a small stream in Short Hills Provincial Park.

Dan, I think it's quite possible. I was very tired when I found the match and didn't feel comfortable saying that it was probably that. I would feel comfortable calling it a horse fly larva.
Thanks Tamar. It looks almost identical to your link. You don't think it's that one?
I think it is a type of fly larva. I am still looking for a match. I have found some simliar looking ones but none that match yet. It looks quite similar to this: http://bugguide.net/node/view/113528/bgimage
I'm sure it is, or else he would be a snack for sure!
Urg! But this little creature is glad you is not the Bear Grylls
