Gordon, I think you are correct. As kids we always called them 'bull ants', and were warned to stay clear of them because of their powerful sting.
Hmmm... This may be an ant mimic called a "velvet ant," but is actually a wingless stinging wasp. It is also known as "cow-killer" for the painfulness of its sting. This may be what you have here. See these pages and let me know what you think: http://bugguide.net/node/view/159/bgimage?from=48
