Description:

Pheasant size with long beak (4-5 inches) top notch feathers on head. Greenish legs.

Notes:

Injured on side of road.

Ya, definitely a bittern, idk what species though.
See if there's a wildlife rehab with a vet. If they get him in quick they can usually save them if their injuries aren't too bad - watch out for that beak during transport.

bitterns live throughout north america in fields and wetlands like most herons. Bitterns are very secretive though and hard to find.
I've never seen one of these in southeast Kansas. Are they common?
