What we called an alligator lizard when we were kids. Had to be 16 inches long.

You kids were smarter than you realized. That is an Alligator Lizard. It looks like the young Panamint (a species of gator lizard) in my field guide but I can't be sure. I've never been lucky enough to see one for myself.
