Field Notes

Description:

Neon orange flowers with darker red-brown markings in the throat. Lily pad like leaves are about as large as my palm (and I buy gloves in the kids' department). Self seeds easily. Doesn't quite vine, more like it uses vertical surfaces to push itself towards the sun.

Seeds grow in groups of three after the flowers fall. They're almost jelly bean shaped and grow larger as they mature, then shrink as they dry. Dry seed looks like little stones or tiny brown brains.

Flowers, leaves, and seeds (if NOT dry/mature) are edible with a peppery flavor like a cross between spinach and cucumber.

Habitat:

Garden. Sunny, full sun, or partial shade. Prefers shade. Drought tolerant.
