Heather ... Good point(s). Dangermouse ... They are beautiful but have a raucous call that doesn't seem to fit their beauty; but then I'm not a Blue Jay.
Elton, I always hesitate to list subspecies, but this is the place to do it, if you're going to list it. I put notes if I'm unsure...But by making an educated guess, and listing your source, you offer to others a place to start and maybe they see a stripe, spot, fold, whatever...and are able to point it out in a comment and you can always go back and edit the spotting later. That is after all, one of the points of this hobby of ours. Happy researching.
Beautiful photo, very colourful! And looking at that snow is helping to cool me down. :) It's nice to see different birds from around the world.
HeatherMiller ... You could very well be correct. I sometimes hesitate to even list the species of a critter (especially insects) because there can be so many with similar characteristics. I'll do some poking around myself. Thanks.
Given your location, could it be a subspecies of bromia? The subspecies is listed all over the internet, but pictures are not so easy to find. I found one ID'd as the C.c. bromia at http://stubblefieldphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Birds/G0000BivrP_LoFwM/I0000vPKXQr7njEM Wikipedia and Encyclopedia of Life don't really do much explaining or giving of ranges. I'll have to check my bird books when I get to them later.
That's a really lovely picture of such a charismatic bird! I used to love seeing these guys in the winter when I lived in Canada, nice to have a burst of colour on the snow!
