Field Notes

Description:

There were many low Physalis shrubs in the area that had maturing fruits and very thick, seemingly hairless stalks. They go by a lot of other common names, one of which being gooseberries, but they are not botanically related to true gooseberries. The fruits are edible both cooked and raw, and the leaves have been used to treat some stomach disorders. However, do not eat the lantern-shaped leaf casing around the fruits (the calyx) as they are toxic.

Habitat:

Along a creekside (up the slope from the water.) Despite having rained a day or two ago, they were looking a bit droopy. We are having our first cooler weather of the season this week, (highs in the 80s, lows in the 60s, Fahrenheit) so maybe that is the cause?
