Golden silk orb-weaver
Nephila sp.
-23.1783, 119.178
Field Notes
Description:
A large female spider that spins the world's largest webs. The "golden" refers to the color of the web silk, and not the spiders. The smaller male shares the females web, and is eventually eaten.
Habitat:
Red rock desert.
Notes:
This web was strung between two trees, and I almost walked face-first into the spider before I registered she was there. I don't think I've ever back-peddled so quickly in my life.
