Field Notes

Description:

I saw this little fellow (I assume) in back in mid-March, when there was still plenty of snow on the ground but the days were getting warmer. I think this was one of his first post-hibernation excursions; he sat by his burrow and whistled every few minutes for an hour or so, announcing his presence to whomever might hear.

Habitat:

Throughout eastern North America and across the north; prefers pastures, forest edges and forests, with relatives living in the mountains.

Notes:

Non-scientific name: Herbert.
