Field Notes

Description:

Male Mallard or Wild Duck, size around 56 to 65 cm (22 to 26") long. With a wing span of 81 to 98 cm (32 to 39"). The breeding male has a bright bottle-green head, black rear end and a yellowish-orange bill tipped with black. The Mallards also have a very distinctive inner patch of purple feathers, only visible when the wings are extended.

Habitat:

This duck was part of a group that live along a stretch of river that runs along the bottom of Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, UK.

Notes:

The male Mallards were having a busy time trying to protect their female interests on quite a busy stretch of river.
