Sure, I'll put an e-mail address in my Noah profile and you can contact me from there.
Sounds great. Thanks for the info. Keep you posted on my progress. I tried to email you from your blog but it wants me to go through my Apple mail, which I don't use. Is there another way I can contact you? Instead of creating super long threads on your photos....
That's great! Light traps are the way to go to attract nocturnal insects. Essentially, you just take a white sheet and string it up so that it gives you a lot of surface area, and set up a UV light by it to get the insects to come to it. If you need tips for making the light trip, here's a page from the University of Kentucky: http://www.uky.edu/Ag/Entomology/ythfacts/4h/unit2/hotm&ult.htm. Here's another one about other collecting techniques: http://www.uky.edu/Ag/Entomology/ythfacts/bugfun/collecti.htm. Your method for collecting all depends on what types of insects you want to attract. That second page gives a lot of methods for collecting different types, so that will be helpful. I have also in the past painted trees with a mixture of molasses, beer, and a lot of other sweet stuff to attract moths and other bugs. I didn't have much luck, but that's because I only tried it for one night. Whichever method you use, you need to keep on trying it and you'll get different results every time.
Sounds good. Yeah, I hear you, I always have a long sleep after returning home or arriving somewhere new. Look forward to seeing more of your spottings. I'm thinking of becoming a bit more serious about collecting insects this summer and on my next trip. I'm thinking of setting up a light trap with an UV light behind it. Any tips for collecting? I'm trying to attract more nocturnal insects, but not keep them, just for a photograph.
I am indeed! I got home yesterday and slept for about twelve hours haha. My internet is a lot better, so it's much easier to submit my spottings now. Hopefully I'll get all my Costa Rica pictures posted soon, then I can start posting my pictures from back home again. Spring's starting, so I'm sure I'll find a lot of great bugs back home.
Nice, I like how they keep their legs tight together. Are you back in the US now?
