It grows as a group or alone. It grows in the ground in pine plantations and Paramo. It is related to acid soils. It is known as a fungus that causes hallucinations and distorted reality.
It is considered that the young mushroom provides a stimulating effect, while the full grown specimens produce hallucinogenic effects. In any case it seems that fresh consumption is more dangerous, since muscarine (toxic substance) is more active, so those who consume prefer to dry it out first.
In homeopathy (homeopathic dilutions only!) Is used to treat skin conditions. Inhibitory properties are described for the growth of tumors (Hobbs 1986).
It name muscaria (fly ), describe it ability to immobilize or kill the flies that land on them, cause its high concentration of toxins in the surface of the cap (pileus).
