Field Notes

Description:

large, grey and black

Habitat:

rainforest

Notes:

Our guide spotted this moth and showed it to us. It was hard to get a photo while he held it because it kept flapping its wings. Once he let it go, it flew into some surrounding grasses. Everyone else lost interest but I saw where it landed and followed it to get a better photo.

Thanks for the ID Jake. I will go with your gut feeling as E. anchemolus.
E. satellitia is also similar, but not exact in my eyes: http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/esatesat.htm
Awesome moth! There are several similar species of Eumorpha, so this might need confirmation. E. anchemolus looks right to me, especially in these links: http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=7857 http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/eanchemo.htm Though it is tough to rule out E. triangulum: http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/etriangu.htm And E. megaeacus is also similar: http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/eeacus.htm Nevertheless, I do think this one is E. anchemolus.
