Rabid Wolf Spider
Rabidosa rabida
36.3134, -82.3535
Field Notes
Description:
Female, about the size of a US quarter.
Habitat:
They often live in meadows and temperate forests, where the ground is covered in grass or leaves and they can build webs, which they use as shelter.
Notes:
I was mowing my lawn the other day and I hit a patch of tall grass. A bunch of baby spiders ran in every direction. This one appeared to be the matriarch, and she just sort of sat there and stared at me for a while (which gave me the opportunity to hastily snap a couple of pictures) before running off.
