Field Notes

Description:

This is a very large porous mushroom. The tree I found this on looked to me like a small oak of some kind. The mushroom was about 8 inches in diameter and about 5 inches thick. The cap was dry, very porous on both upper and bottom portions. Spongy or styrofoam-looking.

Habitat:

Located in the desert shrubland of Northwestern New Mexico within a dense Ponderosa Pine woodland near the Cibola National Forest.

Notes:

Identified thanks to Mark Ridgway!

Well done, Mark. This is a great spotting. Very handsome specimen, and a decent size too.
This spotting is for mushroom only, tree came as just a side note that came to mind. When I go back I plan on getting a picture of the tree with leaves as well. But this is just a spotting for the mushroom. Thanks!
If you have pictures of the tree other than just the bark/trunk it would be good to make another spotting just for that. A spotting should be for a single species. I know how you feel about not being out there :-)
Hi there, thank you so much! And the tree was definitely not a conifer of any kind, leaves were oak shaped.
..actually the bark looks like Douglas fir too. (Pseudotsuga menziesii)
