Field Notes

Notes:

The taxonomy of North American Ratsnakes is currently under scrutiny. The former Elaphe obsoleta was split into three species, and the genus Pantherophis was resurrected. What was once known as the Black Ratsnake is now more properly known as the Eastern Ratsnake.

Snakes from the northern portion of the range are black, while snakes in the south can be patterned gray and striped yellow. Intermediate forms, dubbed "Greenish" Ratsnakes, are found in certain areas of the Southeastern United States.
