Field Notes

Description:

Distinguished from a bee by the short antenna and the mouthparts. Also only has one pair of wings instead of two like bees.

Habitat:

Open scrubland. This particular one was found among coastal dunes.

Notes:

Although a bee mimic this fly feeds on pollen and nectar and is totally harmless.

Cheers. There are some really cool hoverflies (geeky I know). I love them. All shapes and sizes :) I'm sure as the summer gets going I will be putting lots more pics on here.
Amazing, I didn't know hoverflies got that big! I'll keep an eye peeled next time I see what looks like a honeybee :) Great snaps too, very detailed!
