I wonder if the strong winds and surf knocked it loose and it wound up on the beach?
Thanks ladies!! It was unlike anything I've ever seen. There must've been thousands of them attached to a giant tree trunk.
I agree with Cynthia about the common name, but I'm pretty sure the species is Lepas anatifera (Smooth gooseneck barnacles).
