you are right generally the kingfisher male and females look very similar there are a very few differences in the markings except in this case
The Belted kingfisher (found in northern North America - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belted_Kingfisher), is, to my knowledge, the only species of bird in which the female has more colorful markings than the male.
Interesting, I never looked at the sexual characteristics. That band looks reddish...so she is more colorful?
Nice. The female is on the left with the extra band on her chest.
