Hover Fly / Flower Fly/ Soldier Fly

I have spent the last year studying them so I have a bit of an unfair advantage. They are pretty little flies. :)

I think you may very well be right. It's always good to have other eyes on these things, especially insects.

I'm sure it is a hoverfly. Check out the Syrphidae section on the site. Think they will be more likely. The soldier flies don't have the same stripe patterns and are a slightly different shape.

If you don't mind, I'd suggest that the eyes and short stubby antennae look more like a fly, perhaps a soldier fly. I'm not sure if I can help you beyond that. See http://www.lifeunseen.com/index8.php and be sure to check out the soldier fly page.

That is a hoverfly or horse fly not a bee. It only has small antenna and doesn't have 2 pairs of wings. I'm not familiar with your native hoverflies though so can't be much more help than that.
