Pinewoods Spiderwort
Tradescantia pinetorum
35.2365, -108.511
Field Notes
Description:
Lovely 3-petaled purple flower with leaves that form an acute angle at the relatively tall stems.
Habitat:
Typically found along roadsides, railroads, fields and thickets. It is said they are less typically found in woods but I located this species within a Ponderosa Pine forest. They are also said to occur along streams.
Notes:
When I first saw this flower my first thought was the Asiatic Dayflower 'Commelina communis' or 'erecta' however, Asiatic Dayflowers have an inflorescence made up of two broad blue petals with one small almost indistinct white petal opposite the two blue petals located on the lower part of the flower.
