Field Notes

Description:

Plataspidae; Plataspinae; Plataspini; Coptosoma obtusiceps Stål, 1871. This bug, like all other plataspids, has a greatly extended scutellum. The main identifiers, for me, (which differentiate this Plataspid from all others in the Philippines) are the large, forward pointing, red eyes and the colouring of the entire dorsal surface, which is greenish brown with dark brown (almost black) speckles.

Habitat:

These Bean Plataspids were spotted, in our backyard, on Hyacinth Bean (Lablab purpureus), known in the Philippines as Bataw. Plant information is from http://www.stuartxchange.org/Bataw.html.....
