Field Notes

Description:

A startling find on a low shrub, there were two large caterpillars of this species on this single plant and few leaves left. A dead leaf on a nearby shrub caught my eye, I include it for comparison, and for fun.

Habitat:

Dim forest understory on a steep rocky slope just paces in from the main highway to San Juan del Sur, within 10 km of the town center.

Notes:

Various sources suggest this insect mainly feeds on plants in the Annonaceae. The adult is striking see http://www.butterflyworld.com/butterflyguide/ArchaeopreponaDemophon.html
