Field Notes

Description:

Single trunk crowned by a series of branches. It's leaves sprout in curious lines which spiral up the branches during the wet season and are shed at the start of the dry season.

Habitat:

spiny forest, southern Madagascar

Notes:

The spiny desert of southern Madagascar is like no other place on earth. The Octopus tree is just one of many endemic species to the region. I call this specimen, Sideshow Bob, after the hair of The Simpsons character.
