Description:

Average sized dragonfly, brown/orange. Natures helicopter.

Habitat:

by a lake in Dorking, Surrey

Notes:

This dragonfly rested in the end-ring of my fishing rod, luckily for the dragonfly I didn't get any bites until it flew away!

There is a lot of variation in colour among all females but I just thought that the green patches suggested Emperor.
Nice picture! It resembles my http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/5534011 (Sympetrum striolatum). On this page (in Dutch unfortunately) you can see the variety in colors (male / female / age) of this common darter.
The female emperor dragonfly should be green, according to wikipedia. Judging from these photos ( http://www.british-dragonflies.org.uk/content/uk-species ) I think it's a Norfolk Hawker
I think this is a female Emperor dragonfly (Anax imperator).
